<p>If you consider yourself a complete sewing newbie and are looking to learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine. What you will learn:</p>
<p>How to set up and thread a machine and how to wind a bobbin.
Understanding stitch tension and stitch length.
How to troubleshoot common problems.
How to sew perfectly straight seams, corners and curves using seam allowance.</p>
<p>On this four hour workshop we will teach you all you need to know about using and making the most of a sewing machine. </p>

<p>Our new six part Introduction to dressmaking course is a great way to get to grips with making your own clothes, a great follow on from introduction to machine sewing by the end of the course you will have the confidence and the know how to feel like you can work through sewing patterns without assistance. </p>
<p>Over six weekly sessions you will learn how to use commercial sewing patterns and put in to practice a variety of different skills and techniques to make up a range of garments. Each step will be demonstrated by your instructor. You will leave the course with a finished top, skirt and dress. </p>
<p>You will spend two sessions per garment covering the following:</p>
<p>Week one and two: Introduction to commercial sewing patterns and how to make a simple top with short cap sleeves with a bias trim neckline.
Taking accurate body measurements to choose the right size of pattern to cut.
Reading and using the commercial patterns effectively and understanding the notations and instructions.
Transferring marking from paper to fabric
Using fabric lay plans to prepare for cutting.
Stay stitching
Attaching bias binding and finishing seams
Neat finishing, creating a back neck opening.</p>
<p>Week three and four: Make either an A-line, straight or gathered waist skirt. All skirts feature pockets, waistband and centre back zip fastening.
Straight darts
Inserting an invisible zip
Inserting in-seam pockets
Attaching waistbands
Stitching in the ditch.
Finishing techniques</p>
<p>Week five and six: Making a fitted dress with the option of two styles, either a shift or gathered waist dress. Both feature a centre back zip and contour darts. Option to make the dress sleeveless or with long/short sleeves and with either a round or v neckline.
Attach facings to neckline and armholes
Set sleeves with an ease stitch.
Sew contour darts
Make basic fit alterations
Make small adjustments to pattern e.g length</p>
